Whilst our journeys may take us far and wide in this world, eventually we are drawn to reunite with our home.

In the tradition of oleh-oleh, this homecoming journey is filled with the fruits of our travels.

THE HUMBLE BEGINNING

Our Story

While planning our wedding in the beautiful town of Labuan Bajo, Indonesia, in 2018, we encountered some challenges sourcing high quality beverages, especially beer.

As this wedding was a celebration of our success in merging our strengths, we saw an opportunity to combine our passion, knowledge, and experience to establish Bale Nagi Brewing.

The reason was simple – to create a unique experience to compliment the growing tourism industry in Labuan Bajo, Flores, Indonesia.

Bale Nagi means “Homecoming”.

It’s a phrase spoken by the Lamaholot tribe who live in East Flores island, Indonesia. For Martha, as a Lamaholot woman, this business is both the reason and vessel for her return. There is no better name than this.

For Casey, this homecoming story is more of an abstract concept. It is his way back to find his passion after working in a different industry.

So we hope you find your homecoming story too.

Meet Martha

I’m a Brand strategist and Customer Experience (CX) designer who is working in the Western Australia tourism industry. As a CX designer, I understand design holistically on multiple levels of craft, operations and strategy. I bring the skills of storytelling, marketing, and Human-Centered Design to Bale Nagi Brewing.

As a local to the island, my goal is to use this business to advocate for my culture preservation and promotion. It’s not only a selling point – its a promise I made to look after our land and the people.

Meet Casey

I’m a Mechanical Engineer by profession. For over a decade, I’ve been working on deep sea robotics and developing new technology to explore the marine world. I have a deep connection to the sea and fell in love with the landscape of Flores the first time Martha shared it with me.

I’m also a craft beer enthusiast & home brewer for over 15 years. From my first basic kit and kilo to designing a pilot brewery for my university, I love experimenting and always perfecting the next recipe. I like to sample new beers to keep up with industry trends and innovations.
